Coalition to Stop Illegal Dumping
The Coalition
to Stop Illegal Dumping was formed in the fall of 2003. While the
City is working collaboratively with other agencies to respond to
the problem of illegal dumping efficiently and proactively, proposals
for customized community programs are being taken from coalition
members. The coalition is set up to collaborate on projects related
to illegal dumping such as:
-
developing an islandwide inventory
of dump sites
-
coordinating cleanups
-
public education
-
enforcement
-
legislation
-
strategic planning
-
resource cultivation
The Coalition to Stop Illegal Dumping invites members from state,
county and federal government; community and civic organizations;
industry and concerned citizens to get involved in finding solutions
for this expansive island problem. To join the coalition, please
email or call 768-3200, or
complete this participation
form.
Across the nation, similar coalitions are often the cornerstone
of effective prevention programs.

Our program recieves Clean Water Act Section 319(h) grant funds
from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to address polluted
runoff or nonpoint source pollution throughout the State of Hawaii.
The program funds projects that demonstrate best management practices
to control or abate nonpoint source pollution. Projects include streambank
restoration. Often before planting to stabilize the streambank and
prevent erosion, projects must clean up lots of trash. Multi year
projects have reported the continuing problem of illegal dumping in
and the around streams after they've cleaned up. More clean ups, restoration,
and community outreach and education is necessary to
prevent illegal dumping and polluted runoff.
