Community Recycling Bins

There are more than 90 Community Recycling Bins at schools around the island, and the program is being expanded further to increase recycling convenience in every community. Each month, the participating schools receive a check for the recyclable material collected in their bins. Since the start of the program in 1990, participating schools have received a total of more than $1 million. New bins, new service contracts and the new HI-5 deposit program are expected to increase revenue returns substantially. Schools interested in joining the program and hosting a community recycling bin on their campus should contact the City’s Recycling Office. Non-profit organizations also can request the HI-5 bin for events.

Multi-Material Recycling Bins are placed full-time on school campuses for use by the school and the surrounding community. These bins accept aluminum, glass, plastic 1 and 2, newspaper, corrugated cardboard, white and colored office paper. More detail about what to recycle. HI-5 Recycling Bins are provided to schools and non-profit organizations to support HI-5 fundraiser collection events. The bin is partitioned into three sections for HI-5 glass, HI-5 plastic and HI-5 aluminum. The bin is dropped just for the event, and removed once they are done. The school or organization receives the full five cents per container collected and their volunteers do not need to haul the material to the redemption centers or pay the recycling company to haul. Pickup services vary at each site depending upon recycling rates. Most sites are serviced on a regular pickup schedule, and some call for pickup service as needed.
