November 2000

Hawaii Convention Center

Congratulations to the Hawaii Convention Center for becoming a new member of the Partnership for the Environment.  The Partnership, which promotes business recycling programs, will formally recognize the convention center’s dedication to reduce waste by presenting a Certificate of Achievement, Nov. 15, at Tour de Trash 2000.

Soon after opening its doors in 1998, the Hawaii Convention Center quickly became established as more than just a place for meetings.  It is where recycling takes top priority.  Dinner napkins, paper menus, beverage cups, and even company logo items are all made from recycled materials.

With its state-of-the-art recycling program, the convention center is fully prepared to meet the recycling needs of environmentally conscious businesses.  Joined together by common goals to recycle, the convention center and Kinko’s collaborated to maximize recycling efforts at this year’s Kinko’s national convention.  The convention center supported Kinko’s steadfast resolve to make recycling a top priority at the convention.  Kinko’s attendees utilized recycling bins for aluminum, glass and paper, while the staff sorted and transferred the materials for the recycling program.  They recycled all the leftover food and food waste, too.

The convention center donates unused perishable and food to the Harbor House, which, in turn, uses the food to serve more than 15,000 meals each month to the Kid’s Kitchen Program.  Food waste is picked up by Eco-Feed, Inc., a local recycler who turns the waste into animal feed!

Tour de Trash 2000

The Partnership for the Environment, a coalition of businesses coordinated by the City & County of Honolulu, presents the second annual Tour de Trash, on Wednesday, Nov. 15, America Recycles Day.  This “open-house” will feature tours of businesses with successful recycling programs, including hotels and restaurants, construction sites and military facilities.  The tour will finish at the Hawaii Convention Center, to relax at the Pau Hana and enjoy pupus, drinks and live music.  The Pau Hana will also showcase the Tour de Trash "Parade of Trucks," including the latest collection vehicles and all kinds of materials in the process of being recycled — all right there in the convention hall.  The cost for Tour de Trash, including the Pau Hana celebration, is $40 per person.  Attendees will receive complimentary recycled items, including a Tour de Trash 2000 T-shirt.  Due to overwhelming response, the tours are sold out.  However, If you would like to be added to our mailing list for next year's tours, please call the Recycling Office at (808) 527-5335.
